WHY WORK SAFELY AT SEA?

The Dutch Safety Board's (OVV) Shipping Accident Report (Rapportage Ongevallen scheepvaart) shows that almost half of all incidents at sea concern work-related accidents.

Sector organisations KVNR,   the Dutch Association of Marine Engineers and the Foundation Sector Council for Fisheries have joined forces for this awareness campaign (on KNRM's initiative and together with Nautilus International maritime trade union).

TOOLS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN YOUR ORGANISATION

Safety is often well regulated on paper, but sometimes the rules do not always match practice. Employees on board do not always dare to choose for their own safety or to stop work in unsafe situations. Examples are: ships that sail with too few life jackets, poor communication and insufficient preparation of (risky) activities.

Furthermore, there are big differences in the available (financial) means to effectively address safety on board. Particularly in the case of smaller (shipping) companies.

As a first step, Safe Working at Sea makes materials available free of charge to organisations in the maritime sectors. These materials are useful both on board and on shore and are offered in Dutch and English. Think of information materials and conversation starters in the form of short videos, posters, stickers and infographics. The first downloads are ready for you.

In early 2022, three webinars were also organised focusing on key sectors: fisheries, hydraulic engineering and merchant shipping.
