WHY WORK SAFELY AT SEA?
The OVV (Dutch Safety Board) Marine Accident Report shows that almost half of incidents at sea involve a work-related accident.
Sector organizations KVNR, the Association of Hydraulic Engineers and the Fisheries Sector Council Foundation are joining forces with this awareness campaign (initiated by KNRM and together with the maritime union Nautilus International).
TOOLS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN YOUR ORGANISATION
Safety is often well regulated on paper, but sometimes the rules do not always fit well with practice. Employees on board do not always dare to opt for their own safety or stop work in the event of unsafe situations. Examples are: ships sailing with too few life vests, poor communication and insufficient preparation of (risky) work.
Furthermore, there are big differences in the available (financial) means to effectively address safety on board. Particularly in the case of smaller (shipping) companies.
As a first step, Safe Working At Sea is providing free materials to organizations in the maritime sectors. These materials are useful both on board and ashore and are offered in Dutch and English. Think of information materials and conversation starters in the form of short videos and posters. In early 2022, three webinars were also organised focusing on key sectors: fisheries, hydraulic engineering and merchant shipping.
